A Man for all Canadians
Ramon John Hnatyshyn, the 24th Governor General of Canada, touched all Canadians. He established awards for the Canadian arts: the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards, the Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Volunteerism in the Arts, thus creating a new excitement and passion for Canadian artists and performers. Mr. and Mrs. Hnatyshyn strengthened ties with Canadian youth by ensuring that young people were invited to as many events as possible and stressed the importance of encouraging Canada’s youth to achieve their academic potential. Mr. Hnatyshyn understood the vital need to champion the diversity that enriched Canadian society and was a strong advocate of multiculturalism.

Ramon Hnatyshyn is remembered for his warmth, his devotion to his country and the work he did on behalf of all Canadians. Mr. Hnatyshyn was an accomplished man with a delightful sense of humour, one who practiced partisan politics with neither malice nor cruelty. He was a man who was always considerate of friends and respectful of political opponents.
Ramon John Hnatyshyn loved his family, he loved his country, he loved his work and he loved living. Ray Hnatyshyn was a decent, delightful, fair-minded person, proud of the Canada he so well served, who opened his heart, welcoming people with his affable personality.
Ramon John Hnatyshyn was a man for all Canadians.
“A Man for All Canadians” also examines the duties of the Governor General through the accomplishments of Mr. Hnatyshyn which are: to carry out the responsibilities as the Queen’s representative, to act as Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Forces, to honour excellence and achievement in a variety of fields, to promote national identity and unity, and to reinforce Canadian values.
His story is also the legacy of the Hnatyshyn family, of how they came to Canada, and how they succeeded. This documentary examines Hnatyshyn’s early life and shows how Canada rewards greatness based on merit, not birth. His story is one of which our diverse nation can be proud. Ray held family and country at the forefront while enriching the lives of all Canadians through the establishment of numerous foundations and awards, and opening up the role of Governor General as a symbol of Canada’s good worth and not just as the Queen’s representative.
